SBT Newsletter 11/19 Part 1

Veterans Day Newsletter

The SBT family of coaches dedicates this issue to America's military veterans, their spouses, caregivers, and families whom we are honored to serve. This year we have chosen to highlight two veterans and one military spouse we coached. Their stories will hopefully show others what a wonderful tool coaching can be during the difficult transition back to civilian life.

Lawanda Whitehorn SBT Coach Debra Payne

former U.S.Army Captain

When Lawanda was discharged from the Army, she returned to school and thereafter became a licensed counselor. Since then, she has maintained a full-time job at a psychological outreach program for Naval and Marine reservists, while attempting to build her own private counseling practice in her spare time. Lawanda is also a single mother of an 11 year old boy, so she worked with her coach Debra Payne to develop more efficient ways to manage her time and to ultimately turn her private practice into a sustainable enterprise. She reports that her coach Debra’s guidance has been tremendously helpful as she sets herself up to become a full-time entrepreneur for a thriving private counseling practice, with quality time for her son as well. Good luck Lawanda!

John Sholtis, former U.S.Army Captain SBT Coach Randall Chase

John, like many other new veterans, came out of the Army unsure about which career path to take. The first job he took didn’t feel like a good fit. With the help of Army veteran and SBT coach Randy Chase, John explored his options and the two made a plan which included John's pursuing an MBA. Randy also coached John on interview skills as they moved forward on the job search. John credits his coach with helping him complete his educational goals and land his “dream job” as a Senior Analyst at Accenture, which begins in May. Congratulations John, well done!

Christina Monfette SBT Coach Alison Carroll

U.S. Marine Corps military spouse

Christina, a Marine Corps spouse, was struggling to balance her multidimensional role, raising two kids while attending graduate school at American University, and being the lead parent in the household while her husband was deployed with a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). As her husband transitioned out of the Marine Corps, Christina was just completing her degree and they needed to figure out where to live, staying on-and-off at their in-laws, in a state of uncertainty. Mounting stress brought strain on the relationship and Christina came to SBT. SBT Coach Alison Carroll helped her find clarity and purpose and recognize that the transition, as well as frequent absences were also very hard on her husband. While Christina has accepted that there will always be absences (her husband is a pilot ), she has a new outlook on her role and its importance in the family unit. She and her husband have come through this stronger and they are happily living in Michigan, close to family and friends. All our best to them!
